Only a Certified Gasfitter is permitted to carry out work on your gas installation (all pipework and appliances connected to the outlet of the gas meter). A Licensed Gasfitter may carry out the work but it must be under the supervision of a Certified Gasfitter. It is illegal for you to carry out gasfitting work.
For your own peace of mind and safety, ask to see their current licence when any gasfitter is carrying out work on your gas installation. Under the terms of their licence they are required to carry their licence card with them.
A Gasfitting Certification Certificate is required for all new gas installations and most alterations to existing installations in your home or business. Make sure your gasfitter gives you a Certificate to confirm the work was completely safely and in accordance with the gas regulations and manufacturer’s instructions.
If you do not have a certificate, you can request one from the Certified Gasfitter or company that carried out the work. Alternatively, for a small fee the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board can provide you with a copy. The Board can also advise you if your Gasfitter has a current licence.
For more information about the licensing regime see the Plumbers, Gasfitters Drainlayers Board website.
To ensure your appliances operate safely and efficiently they should be regularly maintained by a Certified Gasfitter. It is recommended that you have your gas appliances serviced in line with the manufacturer’s instruction; as a minimum your Natural Gas appliances should be serviced once a year.
If you are looking for a gasfitter, you can find one by checking the “Gasfitter” listing in the Yellow Pages or searching for a gasfitter on the Master Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers website.
To help make sure gas appliances are used safely, Energy Safety (ES) in association with the Gas Association of New Zealand (GANZ), the LPG Association and the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drain Layers Board, have published an easy-to-read consumer leaflet, Living Safely with Gas.
This leaflet contains important safety information for households where gas appliances are installed. It provides information on the following topics:
Anyone who owns or uses natural gas appliances will find the information useful. Copies of the pamphlet can be downloaded from the link on our Publications & Disclosures webpage. Alternatively this document, and other consumer safety information, can be found by searching on the Energy Safety website.
