Connecting to Natural Gas

Contact Your Retailer

In all instances where you are looking to connect to gas - whether a property is already connected to gas or not - you must contact your retailer who will make the necessary arrangements for you.

GasNet is unable to act on a request that has not been accepted by the retailer, except where it is an emergency or where the requested information is of a general nature. Although at times this may appear confusing and inefficient, the process is essential because your gas supply and any problems that may occur are the retailer’s responsibility; GasNet is contracted to the retailer, not the consumer, for provision of the network and metering services.

The property owner is responsible for the installation (pipes, fittings and appliances) on the consumer’s side of the gas meter, and by law, only Certified Gasfitter’s are permitted to perform any work on the installation. If you need a gasfitter please refer to the Yellow Pages under “Gasfitters” or search for one on the Master Plumbers, Gasfitters & Drainlayers NZ website.

Your retailer will process your application and advise you of the appropriate charges. Once your application has been assessed and you have indicated to us your acceptance of any applicable charges, you may proceed with arranging the purchase and installation of your gas appliances.

If you do not have a retailer or are considering changing, the list of retailer’s presently operating over GasNet’s networks can be found on the Links webpage under Retailers.  Already Connected to Gas

If your property is already connected to a GasNet network contact your retailer who will make the necessary arrangements to have the gas turned on.

If you are unsure whether gas is available please feel free to contact us and we will check our records and advise you accordingly. For the contact options please refer to the Contact us webpage.

Not Connected to Gas

If your property is not already connected to a GasNet network you will need to contact your retailer who will then request information from us as to what is required for the property to be connected.

GasNet will then establish if there are any special conditions to consider e.g. any charges that might be applicable, or consents required to install pipes in another person’s property. Once this information has been sorted out GasNet will then advise your retailer who in turn will contact you. If you accept the offer from your retailer they will then confirm with us that you wish to proceed and we will make the necessary arrangements for connection to be completed.

If your property is not fronted by a suitable gas main pipe GasNet may be required to extend its existing network. Based on the economics of the proposed extension, you may be required to contribute to the costs for the work to proceed. Once the main pipe has been installed in the street the connection will be made and a new service pipe installed from the main to the building.

If your retailer has also requested that GasNet provides the meter we will install it at the time the service pipe is completed and commissioned.
